The overall objective of the Brine Chemistry Consortium is to perform research, testing, education and technology transfer on brine chemistry, primarily related to oil and gas production. Most brine chemistry problems and approaches in the oil and gas industry are generic and normally treated as essentially non-proprietary in nature. Therefore, it is reasonable to share research resources directed toward solving many of the different types of problems associated with brine production and disposal.

Companies are invited to participate in the Rice University Brine Chemistry Consortium (BCC), which is in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in the Brown School of Engineering. The overall objective of the BCC is to solve problems related to brine production in the oil and gas industry. As a Consortium, we have worked on oil and gas brine chemistry for over twenty years. Normally, our work is divided between laboratory testing, full-scale field research, and technology transfer. Research has focused on scale prediction using the latest Pitzer theory for high TDS brines, a chemical squeeze design with related complete software, and the impact of hydrate breakers on salt and scale deposition and inhibition. NACE and ASTM have adopted our phosphonate inhibitor test procedure as recommended practices. At present, twenty-six oil and gas and service companies are members of this consortium.
